POE, HAMLET AND LA
Posted by MC Lars on Sat, September 5, 2009 at 11:03 am
Edgar Allan Poe once wrote that the most beautiful poetic theme was the death of a beautiful woman. That is because women he always loved throughout his life died. My cousin makes liberal use of this theme in his new remake of “The House on Sorority Row.”
We came down to LA for the premiere and had lots of family time and hung out with the actors at the Hollywood screening. Then we went to the Getty yesterday. It’s funny being here as a tourist after having lived in Hollywood for most of 2008.
Do I miss LA? That’s up in the air.

I worked at a summer camp near Tahoe last week. One day during story hour I was reading the Bearenstain Bears book where the mom gets a new job.

“How of your moms have jobs?” I asked the kids on the old lodge deck.
“My mom just stays at home all day,” one of the kids said.
“That’s because you’re from Texas,” another kid responded.
Kids say the most hilarious and true things. Another kindergartner mentioned how playing with oobleck felt like “Being punched in the butthole really hard.” These were hilarious camp moments. I don’t quite get the oobleck metaphor though.

My November tour with YTCracker and K.Flay is coming together. We were going to be out in October until I got added to the Bowling for Soup / Zebrahead / Leftovers UK tour, so we pushed the US club tour back. We’ve been talking to a promoter in Russia who wants to bring us out for some shows in early 2010. Damn, Russia would be amazing to see.
Thanks to all of you, we’ve basically recouped on the “Single and Famous” EP. It was an awesome project to see how much Flay and I could do on our own, with no label, my publicity push, no radio, and no video plugger. That’s really satisfying.

I have been connecting with Stanford professors about going forward with academic work in regards to music and hip-hop. I don’t want to say I’m going back to grad school any time soon, but one of my ultimate goals has always been to be a professor of hip-hop culture at a university somewhere and write books about the culture. So I’m exploring options. And figuring out the long term plan.
I want to figure out what’s next for MC Lars. Writing records and touring is awesome, and I will keep making music I love and finding people to market and distribute it, but the industry wasn’t where it was when I started in 2003. Things have changed incredibly. I feel bad for anyone trying to start out now. If I were 20 again, I would have definitely stayed in school and done marketing or something and made music for fun. But I’m figuring out where to go next with this. Developing more artists on my label? If I can get an investor. Putting out more kids records after this next one? More collab EPs? Writing ideas for musicals? Being on tour nine months of the year? You can only do so much while staying DIY and these are all of the options I’m weighing.
Sometimes it’s good to just go with one plan and stick to it. Witness this guy:

Figuring out what that plan is.
Love y’all.
Lars
